On-Demand Roundtable: Top Permitting & Licensing Challenges IT & Business Leaders Are Solving

June 12, 2026

Roundtable June 2026 v2

General

A conversation with the cities of San Bernardino and Oakland on what it takes to make permitting better for constituents and the back office

Working in permitting and licensing can feel like solving problems in a vacuum, especially when you don’t have visibility into how other cities are dealing with the same issues.

For this roundtable conversation, Cory Hodges, Assistant to the City Manager at the City of San Bernardino, and Michelle NewRingeisen, Strategy and Business Operations at the City of Oakland, discuss what it actually takes to make permitting better for constituents and staff.

Cory's team is mid-implementation: moving to more modern systems, onboarding departments onto a shared platform, and learning in real time from staff and resident feedback as business licensing goes live and public works rolls out.

Michelle's team already has a strong system in place, and now she's focused on making it more coordinated across departments, with stronger governance and a clearer way to prioritize the efforts that will have the biggest impact.

While most webinars wait until projects are done, we invited two leaders who are still in the middle of the work to share what they're learning, where they’re seeing traction, and what they wish they'd known sooner.

What you’ll hear:

  • What it takes to get departments aligned after years of working independently

  • How to balance improving the external-facing system while fixing the backend

  • The difference between what's urgent and what's critical, and how to triage both

  • What surprised them most about the time, resources, and change management involved

  • The advice they'd give to someone starting this work today
